Duguid Receives Order of Canada

Congratulations to Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame member Don Duguid who was among 114 appointees to the Order of Canada announced recently by the Governor General. Duguid’s citation advised he is “Recognized for his contributions to the sport of curling, as an athlete, broadcaster and teacher”.

Duguid: Order of Canada

THANK YOU FOR YOUR $25 DONATION: As a “thank you” to past and current Manitoba competitors, for your donation of $25 or more, MCHoF&M and CurlManitoba will provide you with an 8½” x 11” certified copy of your Manitoba competitive performance record. The electronic certificate includes a summary of your win-loss record and the attached pages detail your every appearance at a provincial, national or world championship – along with all of your MCA, MLCA, and Manitoba Junior open bonspiel event trophy wins.

PANDEMIC UPDATE: There are still no plans in place for the 2020 Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame Induction dinner – except to say it will not take place in 2020. The Board of Directors has taken advantage of Zoom technology to continue to meet regularly and the agenda continues to include a discussion of what the next Induction event should look like when we finally get out of the pandemic. We will keep you informed (when there is something to report) but no doubt by the time the pandemic ends, we’ll be looking forward to seeing old friends again.

WORK PROJECTS FUNDING: Thanks to Manitoba Curling Museum Curator Heather Helston and Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame Curator Andrea Reichert, progress is being made in the electronic cataloguing of the Manitoba Curling Museum’s collection of some 40,000 pieces. With the support of job creation funding grants, we have been able to bring in trainees who have worked with and under the guidance of Heather and Andrea to digitize the paperwork and begin the work of redeveloping our collection systems.

That work is on-going with two new grants confirmed in November. In this regard, we are pleased to announce that museum assistant Maya Martinez-Alper will begin work December 8th and will be with us until March 31, 2021.

However, it is not all ‘hired help’. We have also had the assistance in this project of a small army of eight volunteer data entry experts. We thank them and invite you to join us if you have some time during the Covid shutdown. Contact us at mbcurlmuseum@gmail.com

DONOR FUNDING: The Notable Teams fund-raiser has generated donations approaching $5,000 as people have taken advantage of the opportunity to vote for their favourite as Manitoba Most Notable Curling Team. The MCHoF&M Board is committed to placing at least half of the proceeds in a Foundation which we

have established at the Winnipeg Foundation with much appreciated matching funding from the Manitoba Heritage Trust Program.

There is a cap on the amount we can deposit in the Foundation for matching ($1 from the Heritage Trust Program for each $2 we deposit). However, we are well under that cap and hope to deposit at least $10,000 before the March 31st deadline. With the matching dollars that would mean a $15,000 bump to an account which already holds just under $20,000.

The Foundation will pay interest every year at the very attractive rates achieved by the Winnipeg Foundation – guaranteeing the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame & Museum has a good start toward meeting annual operating costs.

If you are interested in contributing to our Foundation (and depositing $1.50 for each $1 you donate), the direct link to our My Charity Tools page is HERE. Or send an email to mbcurlmuseum@gmail.com and we’ll follow-up with you!
